The Prevention and Education Objectives of the National Drugs Strategy are as follows:

  • Louise Nolan, Prevention Education WorkerTo create greater societal awareness about the dangers and prevalence of drug misuse.
  • To equip young people and other vulnerable groups with the skills and supports necessary to make informed choices about their health, personal lives and social development.

The Mid-term Review of the National Drug Strategy found that considerable progress had been made to date and identified areas that need further work in order to fully implement the actions.

These include:

  • Exploring ways of involving parents and families in prevention programmes, in particular parents and families of “at risk” children (actions 34 and 35).
  • Factual preventative information for parents and families in dealing with substance misuse should be more easily accessible in appropriate locations.
  • With regard to programmes in non-school based settings, these should also apply in non-school settings. This is particularly important in that this sector deals with young people from more disadvantaged backgrounds who are at a higher risk of early school-leaving and drug misuse.

These objectives have been examined and have been used to create localised objectives and actions, which will be implemented in the Dublin North East Area by the Prevention Education team in partnership with relevant agencies and with support from the Prevention Education Sub Group.

The Prevention Education Team of the DNELDTF, provide a range of services aimed at preventing, delaying onset and reducing the harms associated with drug use.  All of these services are informed by current research and best practice guidelines.
